| Comment | This version of the Stone Roses' classic debut album was remastered using the state-of-the-art K2 24-bit mastering process and there is a definite improvement in high frequency detail and bass extension here. BUT sadly, it's one step forwards, two steps back, as this version has had its dynamic range squashed. It's not bad by the standards of many modern releases but very disappointing for a release (and format) that is marketed on the basis of its superior sound quality. Frustratingly, I think this disc might have delivered on its promise had whoever was responsible for mastering not squashed the dynamic range (I think the sound is better than the original CD in other respects). The dynamic range of the original UK CD and the 1999 reissue is _much_ better. Despite its crisper, more detailed sound, the compression added to this SHM CD version makes the music sound 'stressed', busy, flat, and fatiguing to listen to by comparison. The original Silvertone CD, whilst lacking the fine detail and bass of the SHM CD, has a much more relaxed, more three-dimensional presentation. I'll take that over boosted loudness any day. Save your money and crank up the original CD... EDIT: You could say this is an intermediate version of the album, in terms of escalating "loudness war" re-mastering. The 2009 remaster is, sadly, louder still. In short, this album deserves a proper audiophile edition.
