| Comment | From the "Columbia Jazz Masterpieces" collection. From what I've read, this was not remastered from the original master 78s, but the tapes that were made from 78s for the original LP release in 1950. While there is generally a good dynamic range in this release, early noise reduction technology seems to have hindered the range of the recording, the highs being muted is the most obvious sign. The 1999 remaster (of the complete concert) preserves the full frequency range; however, as you can see in reviews all over the internet, this is at the expense of surface noise reduction from the original 78s. Many people have mentioned that this can be distracting. |
