| Comment | This analysis includes 7 bonus tracks, starting with #10 - Vincent Price Excerpt. At some point I may run a second analysis of just the original 9 tracks, corresponding with the 1982 release, for a fair comparison with earlier CD and vinyl releases. With or without the bonus tracks, it is clear to see that unnecessary dynamic range compression was performed on this particular reissue. Perhaps a better digital transfer(better converters, etc) was performed from the original master tapes, or at least the same tapes as were used on the original vinyl or CDs, but was it necessary to perform this 'final step' of compression/limiting/level boost to the tracks? This is all too often the case with so-called "remasters", when all that should be done is that better transfer using up-to-date equipment and better digital conversion technology. Did Michael J. sign off on this dynamic range trampling, or was it his producer, manager, or the label itself demanding it? We may never know. But I am glad to have both this edition and the original 1980s CD side-by-side for comparison. |
