| Comment | Listening level Listening at the proper sound level is important to the experience and understanding of POINT LINE CLOUD. Relative to many commercial discs, POINT LINE CLOUD sounds quiet and will need to be boosted to experience the full dynamic range. This is because POINT LINE CLOUD was realized and mastered without dynamic range compression. Compressors flatten the amplitude peaks in an audio signal while boosting the overall level. When my music is compressed (for example radio broadcasts) accented particles are de-accented, which obscures the rhythmic structure. To give an idea of what I consider to be an appropriate level, I positioned a sound level meter at two meters from the loudspeakers and measured the playback of the first movement of Half-life. The average level was 86 dB (A weighted). In concerts, I project these pieces over multichannel sound systems, which adds a spatial dimension that is not present in these stereo versions. |
