| Comment | "Surpr?se" indeed. The two discs contain the entire material of the "Blues Collection" disc (The King of the Blues) plus - as the packaging states 'Life [sic!] Recordings' and 'Partly Historical Recordings'. Hysterical might be more appropriate as the sound on some of those tracks (particularly "That Evil Child", "Long Nights", "I'm Willing to Run All the Way" (actually an improperly labeled "Ole Time Religion"), "Army of the Lord", "I Never Heard a Man", "Save a Seat for Me", "Servant's Prayer" and "Precious Lord") is lousy. Nevertheless, it's interesting to note that "Long Nights" as well as the six Spirituals have additional overdubs compared to the Ace remasters ("Precious Lord" is the overdubbed version as featured among the bonus tracks on the Ace remaster) and might be sourced directly from the reissue singles/LPs which *could* explain the muffled sound. Some tracks sound fine, though. Many tracks are slightly mislabeled (the log files above are corrected by me); particularly misleading is track 17 on disc 2, as "Lucille" and "My Lucille" are two completely different songs! |
