| Comment | Year listed is approximate. This disc has the earliest catalog number, but I know it isn't a 1982/1983 disc because those were made in Japan and this says "Made in the USA" on the outer rim of the disc. So how do I come up with 1990? 1) The back label says "Now Made In The USA" on a white background vertical strip which Sony introduced in the mid-1980s when it first started making discs for the USA market in the USA. In fact, a 1985 release of this disc has that printed on it. (2) But, this disc also has "CMU P 42" printed on the inner plastic ring, indicating it was made at the Sony Pitman, NJ plant, but that plant didn't start making discs until around 1989. Finallly, (3) Epic released a newer pressing of this disc in 1991, and that version did not have the "Now Made In USA" white bar on the back label, and I assume that version superseded this one. So ... by a crude form of triangulation, i came up with 1990 as the year, though 1989 could work as well. The disc SOUNDS great, and the DR values indicate that mastering similar to the early 1980s Japan discs was used, so perhaps any Thriller disc made in the 1980s is worth having, as they are far better than the "remasters" of the past 15 years (stupidly, back in 2003 I bought a 20th Anniversary remaster disc that turned out to be very compressed. When I bought that disc, I threw out my original Thriller disc i purchased in 1986, so glad I now have this disc). |
