| Comment | My favorite band in the entire world.... Help me understand why the MP3 version of this album is more dynamic(not by much) than the High Rez version. I simply do not understand this, quit crushing the dynamics.... The mp3 is NOT more dynamic. Lossy encoding creates higher peaks, which often fools the software measuring the dynamic range into giving higher numbers. It doesn't mean the mp3 is more dynamic. What is the deal with the vinyl having DR values in the 12 and 13 range and the cd, download (24/96) having such disappointing numbers? You're comparing analogue to digital formats... The internet will answer your question. Although, high-res audio was supposed to replicate the depth and dynamics of a vinyl record in digital format. It rarely does, Like with this album, they simply up and down scale the exact same master for different formats and charge different prices. It's a scam which relies on the placebo effect. I never thought I'd say this but Apple iTunes often produce the most dynamic masters. Actually just found this out. I was correct in my thinking above. The MFiT version(MP3) of this album is a 44.1kHz/24bit master of the album. The 96kHz/24bit version is a separate master used for the CD. The Metallica Admin for their Forum said they may possibly switch to the MFiT version of the album at 44.1kHz/24bit over the 96kHz/24bit version because it's more dynamic. |
