This is especially important for mono rips made with a stereo cartridge as it removes phase errors created from any misalignment of the cartridge (which is almost impossible to avoid unless you calibrated your cartridge alignment with an oscilloscope!) Removing DC bias was accomplished using the filter: Audacity 1.3.12b > Effects > DC Bias Remover (VST plug-in). Each stereo track was then down-mixed to true mono in order to cancel out any remaining phase errors. Clarity ensued. This was done using: Audacity 1.3.12b > Menus > Tracks > Stereo to Mono Track 13 was then identified as the peak track and amplified +1.9 dB for a peak level of -0.1 dB for that track. Because this was the peak track, all other tracks were amplified only by the same +1.9 dB, preserving their loudness relative to one another and creating an album peak of -0.1 dB. Tracks were then saved as 24/96 Signed PCM MS WAV files and converted to FLAC using XLD 123.3 for OS X. WHY? --> The net effect of this post-processing is better, true mono sound and half the file size. By downmixing to true mono the redundant and phase error-creating stereo data is eliminated, reducing the file size to 50% of the original torrent size. Just A/B the two and you should immediately hear the distracting false stereo data in the original files.
